About this work
During his travels across the USA and Canada, Buchser made numerous landscape studies. These repeatedly served him as models for oil paintings. Of the rapids of the St. Marys River, which forms the border between Michigan (USA) and Ontario (Canada), Buchser was particularly fascinated: several similar versions of this motif exist. The preliminary sketches were supposedly drawn by Buchser on a rock in the middle of the river.
