About this work
The painting depicts the legendary stratagem of the women of Weinsberg, which allegedly took place in 1140 at the eponymous castle. King Conrad III of the Hohenstaufen dynasty was at war with the Welf family and, in the course of this, besieged the castle. The ruler promised the women that they could safely leave the castle and allowed them to take whatever they could carry on their shoulders.
