About this work
The Annunciation distributed over panels 1798a and b once formed the visible exterior of a large altarpiece in its closed state. The detached interior left side with a depiction of the Agony in the Garden was acquired at the 450th Lempertz auction (June 11–14, 1958, no. 115) in 1958. It is said to have previously been in the possession of Charles Albert de Burlet, Basel, from whom the exteriors had already been acquired in 1941.
