About this work
The painting originally formed the front and back of a panel together with Inv. 228 (The Birth of Mary). This belonged to a Marian cycle dated 1512 by Hans Fries, of which nine paintings have survived: six of them in the Kunstmuseum Basel (Inv. 226–231), two in the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg (GM 338, GM 339) and one in the Hamburger Kunsthalle (Inv. No. 750). They apparently adorned the two wings of an altarpiece whose lost central part presumably consisted of a painted...
