Kennedy Space Center, Fla. — A fireball erupts under the Boeing Delta II rocket, amid clouds of smoke and steam, as it lifts off from Launch Pad 17A, Cape Canaveral Air Station, at 11:44 a.m. EDT. The shadow of a photographer (right) is caught watching the perfect launch. The rocket carries NASA's Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) satellite, which was developed to investigate the origin and evolution of the lightest elements in the universe hydrogen and deuterium.
