About this work
ISS017-E-009777 (24 June 2008) --- Aeolian Islands, Italy are featured in this image photographed by an Expedition 17 crewmember on the International Space Station. The Aeolian Islands formed from a chain of volcanoes in the Tyrrhenian Sea to the north of the island of Sicily. The islands have been studied by geologists and vulcanologists since the 18th century, and were accorded UNESCO World Heritage Site status in 2000 in recognition of their continuing value to study of volcanic processes.
