About this work
STS077-715-037 (19-29 May 1996) --- According to NASA scientists, Ruapehu, on New Zealand?s North Island, is one of the most active volcanoes in the South Pacific. Prior to the flight, crew members scheduled this site as one of their photographic targets. The volcano endured a significant eruption in late September, 1995. This view is the first image of the crater region since that eruption. Since then, numerous landslides and secondary explosions in the summit area has produced changes.
