About this work
Writing table. Japan. 18th Century. Lacquer on wood. The decoration of a cockerel, hen and chicks feeding in a bamboo grove is symbolic of a peaceful and happy family life. The table could be used for both writing and reading scrolls. The raised edges prevented the scrolls of paper from rolling off the sides. Westendorp bequest.
