Tiger. China, c. 1700. Gao Qipei (1660–1734). Colors and ink on paper. Tigers were a favorite theme of the eccentric painter Gao Qipei. Here he depicts a tiger in an uncharacteristic pose: a tired, shabby animal, quite unaware that anyone has managed to get this close.
