About this work
Kuvera. Indonesia, Central Java, Gedong Songo. Late 8th - early 9th century. Volcanic rock (andesite). The god of wealth is recognisable by the jewel and his bulging purse. The crossed bead string over his chest is worn only by young deities. This statue originated from the lowest temple of the Gedong Songo temple complex built against the slopes of Ungaran mountain. All these temples are dedicated to Shiva. These represent some of the earliest antiquities of the Central Javanese period (late 8th - early 10th century).
