About this work

Japanese men's attire includes an under-kimono that remains invisible when worn. The decoration reflects the owner's personal preferences. The combination of symbols on this one, a family crest consisting of rectangles and a langoustine, refers to a famous actor from the Kabuki theatre. A display of Japanese men's kimonos is on view downstairs in the Asian Pavilion.
