About this work
On the bank of the river Ladon, the nymph Syrinx tries to escape the god Pan. Syrinx had dedicated her lifestyle to Diana and is therefore depicted in hunting attire with a quiver. Before Pan can catch her, she turns into marsh reed. To the right, several satyrs. To the left, the river god and two river nymphs. This story is told by Mercury to lull the hundred-eyed Argus to sleep and free the cow Io. Below the image, two pairs of Latin verses. The print is part of an album.
