Mercury and Battus

Apollo, depicted as a shepherd, plays his pan flute and pays no attention to his flock. Mercury, recognizable by his winged sandals, has cunningly driven the flock away. The old man Battus promised Mercury he would say nothing about what he had seen. When Mercury asked him about it in another guise, Battus still spoke and was turned into a rock.
