About this work
Cadmus, sent by his father to search for his sister Europa, asks the oracle of Delphi what he should do now that he has not been able to find her. The oracle answers that he will meet a cow in the field. He must follow its track and found the city of Thebes where it lies down. In the foreground of the representation, Cadmus kneels before the oracle, the statue of the god Apollo. In the background on the right, he follows the cow. Below the representation, two times two lines of verse in Latin. The print is part of an album.
