About this work

The jurist Aemilius Papinianus has just been beheaded by order of Emperor Caracalla. The executioner gives the head of Papinianus to Caracalla. Papinianus had tried to mediate between the brothers Caracalla and Geta, both of whom were emperors. In the background, Caracalla, or one of his soldiers, murders Geta in the lap of their mother. Below the image, two four-line verses in Latin. The print is part of an album.
