Book with a title page and 118 woodcuts on 290 leaves. The book contains the text and illustrations for the story 'Theuerdank' (also 'Teurdanck', 'Theuerdanck', or 'Tewerdank'). This fictionalized love story was composed by Emperor Maximilian I of Habsburg and written down by Siegmund von Dietrichstein, Marx Treitzsaurwein, and mainly Melchior Pfintzing, who completed it for publication in 1514. The story concerns the adventures of the knight Theuerdank (Maximilian I) on his way to Ehrenreich (Maria, Duchess of Burgundy) with the aim of wooing her. Supported by the good spirit Ehrenhold, he attempts to defeat opponents Umfallo, Fürwittig, and Neidelhart (who represent three stages of life). Maria had already died in 1482, so this story can also be read as a tribute to the marriage.
