About this work
These vases were filled with soil in order to grow bulbs or plants which would be watered through the pedestal. The painted scenes with Chinese figures and flowers are based in 18th-century Chinese prints. Although dozens of painters worked at the factory, this type of intricate decoration was exclusively created by Charles Nicolas Dodin. The most talented painter at the factory, Dodin used an exceptionally varied palette to depict these refined scenes.
