Folding fan with double leaf of paper on which on the front with red ink a question-and-answer game is printed, on a frame of rosewood and ebony

These etched fan leaves were printed in large quantities and mounted on simple wooden frames. Some variation was achieved by applying other stipple engravings or by using a different colour printing ink. Thus, in the collection of Felix Tal in Museum Beeckestijn there is the same example, which differs only in colour (blue) and in the representation in the middle. These were cheap fans that were not always mounted as accurately, as is also the case with this example. That the question and answer game on the front concerns love is evident especially from the text under the pasted stipple engraving. This ends with the sentence 'Livronts Nous Aux Tendres Delires' or 'Let us surrender to the sweet madness'. The game was played by the lover choosing a random question on the left half of the leaf and his beloved answering him with a randomly chosen answer from the right side.
