Tapestry with the History of Niobe's Pride, from the Diana Series

Niobe, dressed in a blue mantle of 14th-century Lucca brocade trimmed with ermine, followed by train-bearers and servants, addresses a group of women and children. In the middle ground, a burning altar with a golden statue of Latona and her twins. To the left stands a priest offering a libation, surrounded by sacrificing and pleading women. To the left, divine retribution: Niobe's fleeing children are killed by arrows shot at them by Apollo and Diana from the clouds. In the upper corners, Pax and Fama; in the lower corners, two mythological figures each: on the left Mars and Venus; on the right Jupiter and Callisto. Marked with the Delft city mark, on the left in the blue lower border: H D (Holland Delft) signed between the border and the center FRANCISCUS.SPIRINGIUS.FECIT.ANNO 1610. In the right blue border is the weaver's mark.
