Cupboard

This cupboard is a work of art showcasing a remarkable interplay of forms and materials. The precious, tropical ebony is glued on the oak and inlaid with mother-of pearl, thus hiding the wood carcass. Herman Doomer made this cupboard ten years after its counterpart, also on view here. The large, twisted columns give this cupboard its monumental character. Rembrandt, who undoubtedly admired Doomer's work, immortalized the cabinetmaker and his wife in pendants in 1640.
