About this work

This substantial sideboard was the most expensive piece of furniture manufactured by the Amsterdam fine art dealer Van Wisselingh & Co for display at the 1904 World's Fair hosted by St. Louis, Missouri (USA). The company's head designer, Lion Cachet, favoured exuberant ornamentation, but this was constrained by the sideboard's sober structure. The copper handles on the drawers are suspended from monkeys' heads.
