About this work

Long palm shawl of woven wool and silk with a white ground, wide cross borders of pomegranates with volute in dark cobalt blue and red on snake scrolls and on the center. A border around with one-sidedly directed, upright pomegranates where the bottom and top ones are opposite to each other, a row of seven pieces. They correspond with the forward-leaning pomegranates of the center border and the corner motifs. Around each pomegranate a white border is cut out like a halo on the ground, while between the pomegranates a very filled pattern stands of snake scrolls of vines. The inner contour of all pomegranates has two concentric bands and serpentine volute vines in between. A foot or vase or leaf rosette is missing in all. The outer border consists of narrow, intersecting at the corners borders with on both sides scrolling branches, set in very narrow frames. The technique consists of a white silk warp with wool weft, 1/3 woven.
