Strip of machine-made lace with a large flower beneath a floral arch and a recurved flower branch above

Strip of natural-coloured machine-made lace: machine-made Alençon lace. The repeating pattern consists of an arch of linked small flowers, beginning and ending with a curved and feathered leaf. Beneath one of these leaves hangs a row of five C-shaped curls. In the field below the arch is a large round flower with heart-shaped petals surrounding an oval centre. A flower branch springs from the side of the arch, curving back over it halfway. The branch bears one large and several smaller flowers reaching almost to the top of the strip. Along the top the branch is framed by half pear-shaped cartouches formed by a curling leaf with three small flowers. The motifs feature contour threads and are connected by a fine machine-made mesh ground. Machine-made ornamental ground is applied beneath the arch and in the cartouches, with ornamental stitches in various flower hearts. The top is finished with a separate band of machine-made lace. The shell edge along the bottom derives from the pattern.
