About this work
The subject is taken from Ovid's Metamorphoses and shows the struggle between Hercules and the river god Acheloüs, both of whom were after the love of Deianeira. Acheloüs changed into a half-bull/human and then into a water snake, but Hercules managed to kill him anyway. That decisive moment is depicted here.
