About this work

Elisabeth van de Wall married on her birthday. This glass was engraved thirteen years later to celebrate her anniversary and 37th birthday. Translation of inscription: 21 February 1705 [and] 21 February 1729 / When Van de Wall with Steen, / Forged her heart and fate to one, / It was the very day on which / Her life on earth had begun. / That occasion is now commemorated, / And I am carried 'round, / Brimful one moment, / And then soon empty found. / A sign of friendship shown by all, / To Steen and Van de Wall. / H. Zweerts. 1742.
