About this work

A rectangular chest lined with green leather and velvet, with gilded copper mounts and handles, Paris, ca. 1840; in the lid a ingeniously mounted mirror with a silver rim and stand, and hook, with Dutch hallmarks, 1897 (BK-KOG-2730-2). All silver pieces are gilded inside, bearing the coat of arms of the Weston family, Dukes of Portland, with the inscription: Craignez Honte; key present; lock signed M.G. Paris. Contents: a silver rectangular water jug with a removable handle, two silver candlesticks, a silver shaving brush holder, an inkwell with a silver lid and screw closure, all in a silver rectangular tray; two rectangular and two square flasks with screw caps and stoppers, one rectangular, two round flasks, three oval boxes, all with silver lids, a silver warming pan with burner and water jug, handle missing. The front of the chest can be opened. In green leather: writing drawer with two inkwells; two drawers and a flat storage compartment; a leather holder for a comb.
