Against a flat, framed background stands the cross, on which Christ hangs with his head obliquely to the left. Above him the inscription INRI in Gothic letters; at the foot of the cross the skull of Adam. To the left of this stands the swooning Mary, supported under the arms by John; to the right, in profile, kneels Mary Magdalene, who looks up at Christ and has her arms wrapped around the cross. Behind her stands, also in profile, Saint Francis with raised hands, depicted at the moment he receives the stigmata. To the left of Christ a flying angel with a chalice to catch the blood from Christ's side wound. Christ has a halo, wears a crown of thorns and a loincloth; Mary wears a gown with long sleeves, a child's cap, and a mantle hanging from the head; John a mantle over a cassock, of which the standing collar is still visible; Mary Magdalene, whose wavy hair falls over her back, a gown with long sleeves and a mantle hanging from the shoulders.
