About this work

Linen damask napkin with a hunting scene. Central field: the symmetrically doubled but incomplete pattern shows, from bottom to top, five scenes: 1 A hunter thrusts a spear at a stag, which is being jumped upon by two dogs, while one dog attacks from the front; two hares flee behind a tree. 2 On either side of a hunting lodge with towers, a tree and a kneeling hunter shooting at birds, accompanied by a dog. 3 A hexagonal water basin with a spouting fountain; on either side, two tazza's, a lying stag and hind, a leaping unicorn, half a tree, and birds, including a flying peacock. 4 An Amazon on horseback with a standing collar and puffed sleeve, falcon on fist, leaping toward the center where a palm tree stands. 5 A hunter with a dog on a leash blows a hunting horn; under a tree are a boar and a hare. Standing borders: single vines with flowers and birds; outside this, a block border. The napkin has no horizontal borders.
