Central Plate of the Tombstone of Gijsbert Willemsz Raet, with an Angel

Together with the four corner plates in the display case, this one decorated the hardstone tombstone of Vicar Gijsbert Willemsz Raet (?-1511), in the Jerusalem Chapel at Gouda, which he founded. The skilfully engraved representations were initially partially coloured in. Although the engraving technique used here differs from that used on plates for prints, the affinity is clear.
