About this work

Cast-iron fireback with a semicircular top. In the center stands the personification of Peace holding a palm branch, with drapery above her and the inscription PAX. Peace stands on coats of arms and two men. Directly next to Peace the inscription Ao 1648 24OC. The whole is framed by a border decorated with a pearl border and on each side a virtue: on the left Prudentia with a mirror and a snake in her hands, on the right Temperantia with a tazza and a jug. At the top an angel's head amidst fruits, at the bottom mirrored S-scrolls. The top is crowned with three knobs with two climbing dolphins on each side.
