About this work

Cast-iron fireback with a semicircular top. In the center, the personification of Charity, a seated woman with a child standing against her. To her left, a child holding up a branch with leaves, with a flying bird above. To the right, a boy holding a spherical object. The right side of the scene is closed off by a tree. The whole is framed by a border decorated with a pearl border and two festoons on the sides. The top of the frame is crowned with a lion's head, and at the bottom of the frame is a scroll with the year 1653. Between the numbers, the fireback is marked. The top is crowned with the head of a putto with a dolphin on either side.
