About this work
This bass viol has a dubious label bearing the name 'John Roos'. This falsification was probably intended to suggest the renowned 16th-century English viol maker John Rose. They are more likely late 17th-century viols by the famous Pieter Rombouts of Amsterdam or someone of his school. Unusually, the seven-stringed instrument still has its original carrying case.
