About this work
This bass viol bears a dubious label with the name 'John Roos'. This falsification was probably intended to suggest the renowned 16th-century English viol maker John Rose. They are more likely to be late 17th-century viols by a Dutch maker (perhaps someone from the school of the famous Pieter Rombouts of Amsterdam). Unusually, the seven-stringed instrument still has its original carrying case.
