About this work

Shoe, flat, of cutwork originally apple-green velvet now faded to light yellow, with a leather sole. The model consists of a vamp, two equal heel pieces or 'quarters', and a sole. The vamp, which ends high on the instep, is decorated with 63 horizontal cuts edged with blanket stitch. The toe is undecorated and somewhat blunt. The heel is divided into eight equal parts by six long, vertical, blanket-stitched cuts. From the heel piece extend two narrow quarters, extended into straps, ending in a blanket-stitched round opening. In the center of the instep are two identical blanket-stitched round openings, which, together with the loose straps, are closed over the instep by a lace (missing here). The shoes are lined with a plain light yellow silk fabric. On the inside, a remnant of the original color of the velvet is still visible in the side seams. The leather sole, which widens towards the toe, is provided with a stamped geometric decoration of lines and dots.
