About this work

Letter bag in a rectangular envelope model of red leather, the front, flap and back (except the edges) entirely embroidered with silver thread: a diagonally hatched frame encloses a diamond pattern, each crossing is contained within four circles, the spaces are filled with vertical hatching. The edge of the bag is trimmed with a gold-yellow border, secured with embroidery stitches. On the inside of the flap is 'Constantinople', '1754', and on the front of the bag the name 'Jean Abraham Grill' is embroidered in gold thread. On the back is a crowned monogram with the letters JAG. The interior is lined with red silk and divided into three compartments of equal size. The flap closes with a metal clasp attached to the point, shaped like a lily.
