Mill cup of the millers' guild in Rotterdam

Silver mill cup. Around the middle of the bell-shaped cup runs a profiled band, under which is an engraved coat of arms with helmet sign and mantling: the field divided of gold and gules; the gold field charged with three black crows, 2 and 1 placed. The gules field charged with a scepter and a flail, crossed according to the direction of the St. Andrew's cross. On both sides of the coat of arms the following verses are engraved: "They say the mill grinds // And turns with all winds // That abundantly, O Friends // Your care and sweat pays // To Fortune that capricious // Offers the mortal his back // Then strokes and then again stern" and "Turns also and turns constantly // But be you of one mind; // Let each give his share; // Then your whole life runs // Fortune before the wind. F.G.". Above the band the following inscription: "Gift of the Lord PIETER KRAAY. To the Rotterdam Millers' Guild. As Heads were: Jan van der Werf, Cornelis de Goeyer and Lodewijk de Vos 1722."
