View of the two Blokhuizen in the Amstel, 1651-1654

View of the two Blockhouses in the Amstel outside Amsterdam, built to defend the city after the failed attack by William II on Amsterdam on July 30, 1650. Completed in 1651, they were demolished again in July 1654. To the left and right of the Blockhouses are two hameys. Various boats are sailing on the water. In one boat stands a small tree, and on another the mast is being lowered. Figures are swimming from a raft or jetty, and in the front right a figure is relieving themselves. Between the two Blockhouses in the background are the outlines of the city with the mill De Joffer and the Zuiderkerk. Top right: Page 222.
