Riot in Middelburg, suppressed by the civic guard

Medal commemorating the restoration of order after the riot of 1704. Obverse: Liberty, depicted as a helmeted maiden, standing on a rampart with the inscription 'S.P.Q.M' (Senatus populusque Medioburgensis), holding a spear with a cap of liberty in her right hand, with a crowned eagle bearing the coat of arms of Middelburg to her right. In the background the town hall of Middelburg with citizens, magistrates and the civic guard in front. Legend: HANC TUE MUR. In the exergue: VALET IRRITATA/ DISHOECKE F(ecit). Reverse: Perseus, depicted as an armored youth, holding a sword in his right hand and the head of Medusa in his left. To the left of Perseus is the winged horse Pegasus, with the beheaded body in front of it. In the background a view of the city of Middelburg and the harbor with some sailing ships.
