About this work
In a hilly landscape, a Roma woman (heathen) breastfeeds her baby. Next to her stands a young child with a bowl and a spoon. On her back a third child who is crying. In the background three travelers and a dog. 'Heathen' or 'heathens' was a contemporary term for Roma. Subject categories within the Atlas Zeden en Gewoonten: The Beginning, Middle and End of Man.
