About this work

Satirical print on the appointment of the Provisional Government and the proclamation of Belgian independence, 1830. The members of the Provisional Government dance around the liberty tree, on top of which sits a monkey with its bare bottom. Hanging from the monkey's bottom is a portrait of a Turk or Arab. On the left and right are female volunteers with rifles. In the foreground, De Potter squats with his trousers around his ankles, trying to defecate, while a maid hands him a piece of paper and says 'it's all wind'. At the top the legend 1-9.
