About this work
The disguised thieves Jan de Rolder and Piet Pothuis raise their glasses in the taproom, where Swaantje stands behind the bar counter raging at her husband Fobert. She is so busy with this that she does not notice she is being robbed. In the side room to the right, Hartje Spilpenning and Saartje van Lichten sit dressed as Mennonites. At the bottom of the margin, a four-line verse in Dutch and French. Scene from the second act of the play De Puiterveense helleveeg, or Beslikte Swaantje aan den tap, by Abraham Alewijn.
