About this work
A watchman with a sword demands money from a young man (Godefroy), who is secretly visiting his beloved (Sybille) at night. The young man reaches into his trouser pocket. The woman holds a candle. On the sidewalk stand a glass and a bottle. To the right in the background, a second watchman. Scene from the comedy 'Captain Ulrich or the Deceived Avarice' by Johan van Paffenrode (1661), in which the avaricious character Ulrich is deceived by his wife Sybille, despite his efforts to have her guarded. Her lover Godefroy bribes the watchman. Stands before the verses in the margin.
