About this work

A watchman with a sword asks a young man (Godefroy), who secretly visits his beloved (Sybille) at night, for money. The young man puts his hand in his trouser pocket. The woman holds a candle. On the pavement stand a glass and a bottle. On the right in the background a second watchman. Scene from the comedy 'Captain Ulrich or the deceived avarice' by Johan van Paffenrode from 1661, in which the greedy character Ulrich is deceived by his wife Sybille, despite him having her guarded. Her lover Godefroy bribes the watchman.
