About this work
A guard with a sword asks a young man (Godefroy), who is secretly visiting his beloved (Sybille) at night, for money. The young man puts his hand in his trouser pocket. The woman holds a candle. On the sidewalk stand a glass and a bottle. To the right in the background a second guard. Scene from the comedy 'Hopman Ulrich or the deceived greed' by Johan van Paffenrode from 1661, in which the greedy character Ulrich is deceived by his wife Sybille, despite him having her guarded. Her lover Godefroy bribes the guard.
