About this work

The fair of Democritus, celebrated in Haarlem at the home of member Ferdinand van der Schaft, 17 March 1801. Masked ball of the Haarlem society Democritus. Sixteen costumed and masked members of the society, in a room illuminated by candles. To the left, a puppet theater and a man sitting on the floor with a white beard and a barrel organ around his neck. Three of the men carry goods in a chest on their backs or hanging in a trough in front of their bellies. Jacob de Vos is welcomed as an honorary member of the society on 20 January 1795.
