Plate from VOC ship 'The White Lion'

Plate from the VOC ship 'Witte Leeuw' with a flat rim, decorated in underglaze blue, 80% present; parts of the wall are missing. The sherd is glassy white and contains little embedded dirt. The glaze is blue-tinted, craquelured, and flakes off over parts of the rim. There are pinholes and small firing cracks at the corners of the rim. The base is glazed. The footring is V-shaped, faceted, and curves inward. More than 20 grains of kiln sand were found. In the center, two birds on a rock by the water, next to them a flowering plant; the scene is surrounded by a bracket-shaped border filled with geometric motifs. On the wall and rim, wide and narrow fields filled with symbols of luck and floral motifs.
