Fragments of a plate from the VOC ship 'De Witte Leeuw'

Plate from the VOC ship 'Witte Leeuw' with a flat rim, decorated in underglaze blue, 60% present; parts of the center and wall are missing. The sherd is glassy white and contains little embedded dirt. The glaze is blue-tinted and has pinholes and small firing cracks at the corners of the rim. The glaze crumbles over parts of the rim. The base is glazed. The footring curves inward, is V-shaped, and faceted. More than 20 grains of kiln sand were found. In the center, a grasshopper on a rock among flowering plants; the scene is enclosed by a bracket-shaped border filled with geometric motifs. On the wall and rim, an arrangement of wide and narrow fields filled with symbols of luck and flowers.
