About this work
Portrait of a Chinese dignitary and scholar with a fan from the Chinese settlement at Deshima. The man wears a black cloak lined with fur. In his right hand he holds a fan painted with an orchid plant. Characteristic of the Chinese literati are also his well-groomed long fingernails. While pushing aside his cloak with his left hand, he points to his well-filled money bag. The red plume with the yellow button on his headgear also indicates a certain official rank. The scroll painting is in a cardboard box with a lid.
