Needle case commemorating the Battle of the Dogger Bank

The round, tapering tube has a screw-off lid with a protruding, octagonal top that serves as a seal. It is entirely worked in repoussé technique. The wall of the lid is decorated with a continuous representation of two sailing ships, depicting the Battle of Dogger Bank. The section below is decorated with the bust of the lieutenant-admiral Arnold Zoutman, above which the name Zoutman appears. Under each medallion is a trophy of an anchor, a halberd, a bundle of arrows, flags, cannons and cannonballs on a rough ground. From this hang two garlands. Below that a sailing ship is depicted. The stamp is engraved with a palm tree accompanied by the letters E (top) C (bottom left) VAL together (bottom right) in a round crowned shield within a cartouche. The seal is bordered by a ribbed rim.
