A Creole

A separate figure from a diorama by Gerrit Schouten, depicting a Creole man, standing turned to the right. Both his hands are raised. The man wears a blue shawl decorated with red and white motifs and edged with a white border. He wears bracelets and anklets and is barefoot. The position of his hands suggests he originally held a musical instrument. A very similar figure from a diorama of a du, a dance of enslaved people on a plantation, in the collection of the Barbados Museum (Medendorp diorama XV), plays a benta, a bow-shaped string instrument or flute.
